Kaylene Chute: "Skimming The Surface" (World Premiere)

When did you first realize your ability to sing?

Well, I cannot remember a time when I did not sing. I just naturally started singing at a very young age. I was always encouraged to sing by family members as a child as my parents thought I had a good voice. I started to enter singing competitions around age 10.

However, I do look back at videos of myself singing from even age 14/15 and I do not think I sound great lol. Though, there was potential to strengthen my voice. I was very insecure about my ability to sing when I was a teenager. Confidence came with growth. I always had a desire to take singing lessons to strengthen my voice yet to this day I have only taken four lessons – I plan on attending more singing lessons for sure.

What is your music and message all about?

Through my music, I express my own thoughts and feelings. Song writing has been my escape from reality for as long as I can remember. I hope my music inspires people to feel something and that people take their own meaning from my music. Of course, there is always a certain message from each song I write that I think I am conveying but I also enjoy the fact that everyone will have their own perspective of my music. People feel music differently. It is similar to poetry, in my opinion. Good lyrics are magic. I am only beginning to record music and therefore, am still searching for my own unique sound. This is something I will explore and feel out.

How would you describe your vocal style?

I would say that I am still searching for my unique vocal style. I have a soulful tone in my voice and I feel most comfortable singing in a fairly low range. When I sing, I sing with emotion. I feel the lyrics I am singing.

What was the hardest part of making this song?

The hardest part of creating Skimming the Surface was working with the producer in getting the background music to what I was hearing in my head when I wrote the lyrics. With clear communication and a couple of tries, we fell onto the same page.

What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?

For me, experiencing the song just being words on paper and a melody in my head to then actually being recorded and produced was amazing and so exciting.

What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?

When producing Skimming the Surface, I realized how important it is to consider how I want listeners to feel when they hear this song. The main thing I would like listeners to feel is enjoyment and to empathize with the lyrics.
