Deleyni Youngson: "One More Time" (Exclusive Interview)

When did you first realize your ability to sing?

I’ve been singing and rapping since before I can remember. I used to love singing along to songs on the radio all the time as a kid. There were a few times I really discovered I had a talent. One of them being in high school, I took this music class. In the class, we were asked to do a segment where we sing a cover of one of our favorite songs. I ranked 9 out of 10 on the vocal scale. Another realization moment for me was recently. I used to work in this Greek restaurant, and my boss there was a singer. We used to have staff parties, and I loved singing along to all the songs that came on. He kept telling me how good I was at singing, and told me how I was going to be a star. I guess it was having someone believe in me like that that made me believe in myself.

What is your music and message all about?

My last song, One More Time, is about letting down someone who believed in me. Having a connection with that person and just wanting to make things right with them. My message as an artist is be yourself. And being open about how you feel. Life is so short, be real with yourself and the people you love. Because in the end, without your people, nothing really matters. You know? I let down some of my people recently. I hurt some of my people recently. But I’m being real and owning that fact. Don’t strive for perfection, strive for authenticity. When you strive for that, what you want and deserve will come to you. Authenticity stays, but perfection is always fleeting. I think it’s the fact that I’ve been so true to myself lately that has encouraged me as an artist.  The other message is, have the courage to live your dream. If you want something bad enough, be brave enough to sacrifice almost anything. Because there is no telling how big that reward can be.

How would you describe your vocal style?

I would describe my vocal style as being pop and rap, with a bit of a House twist.

What was the hardest part of making this song?

The hardest part of making this song? I wouldn’t say any of it was hard, rather a bit challenging here and there. For example, I did have a little bit of trouble with the vocals throughout the making of the song. I still think I could have pushed myself even harder with them, but it was a learning experience for me. But to be honest, I enjoyed every moment of making One More Time.

What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?

I’d say the most enjoyable part of making One More Time was recording it in the studio. I felt so in my element being behind the microphone. What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?

I want to leave my listeners with hope and belief in themselves. Also, confidence.  I want women, especially those who listen to my songs, to feel sexy.  My mom used to tell me not to worry. She would say that if it's meant to be it’ll be and not stress it. I want to leave my listeners with that feeling.

How do you prepare for your live performances?

I haven’t really done any live performances, but how I prepare for studio sessions is by winging it. Even if I mess up the lyrics or I’m off beat, just wing it until I get it right. Because after a few times winging it, I get a handle on it and can get it right.
