Shalaine Stebner: "Brenda" (Feature/Interview)

Shalaine Stebner: "Brenda" (Feature/Interview)

When did you first realize your ability to sing?

I don't think there ever was a time when I didn't sing! I remember driving in the propane delivery truck with my dad and just singing and making up songs the whole time. When I finally got to sing on stage though, that was when the love and obsession began. Dad always was in a band playing the drums, so there was always a band practice in our basement. They would travel around playing hall dances and wedding receptions and anniversary parties, and one night, one of the singers invited me to sing a song with them! After that I have literally used any and all excuses to get up on the stage and sing!

What is your music and message all about?

I am heavily influenced from the 80's/90's/2000's country that I grew up on. Infusing that style of music into my writing and performing has helped me deliver a roots based, heart first style of writing, mixed with a little bit of sass! I think that what makes me unique is that I am a "late bloomer" so to say. I didn't start my professional career until I was in my mid 30's. I established a career and had a family first. My main message for everyone is that it is NEVER too late!

How would you describe your vocal style?

My vocal style is a little bit of everything! I can add a hard rocker growl and a scale running solo! I am for sure country though!

What was the hardest part of making this song?

The hardest part of making Brenda was figuring out how fast we could go without losing any diction or getting lost in trying to keep up! It took a few tries but when we finally settled on the correct timing, everything just flowed!

What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?

I loved every part of Brenda! When I started with the idea, I said..."There are no good songs about Brenda...there are lots of songs about a lot of other women, but Brenda deserves some love" and it just kind of flowed. I knew that I wanted her to end up on top but I knew that I needed a good tag line, and what bad a$$ woman doesn't drink wine and smoke cigarettes!!!  It was so enjoyable from start to finish!

What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?

Because this song is so fast and light hearted, I just want to share a bit more Joy! We don't have enough laughter in our lives!

How do you prepare for your live performances?

I love love love playing live! I practice weekly to ensure that my performance and delivery are up to my standards. After setting up, I love sitting in the crowd and talking to people! They get me in to "the zone"!
