Jules & F.Y.D.I: 'I'mPerfect' (Feature/Interview)

Jules & F.Y.D.I: 'I'mPerfect' (Feature/Interview)

When did you first realize your ability to sing?

F.Y.D.I I went to a performing arts High school as a dancer. When I was in the 8th grade I was convinced to join the school choir. In my first few rehearsals, I learned I had an ear for harmonies, creating and following them. After that as they say was history. I found myself in every ensemble, musical and school performance. My love of music began then and I haven’t looked back since.

Jules I’ve been singing ever since I was a little girl. I’ve been around music my whole life. My dad is a drummer, so I come from a very musical family. Singing for me has always been a passion and I’ve always had a love for entertaining. I would say that I started taking singing more seriously around 12 years old. That’s when I started participating in singing competitions and talent showcases. I’ll never forget one show in particular, I sang “Gravity” by Sara Bareilles. While performing, I remember seeing people crying in the audience. They were coming up to me afterwards and wanting to take a photo with me. I was about 13 at the time. Hearing them tell me how moved they were by my performance and how much they loved my voice was really the first time I realized “Okay this could turn into something more.” That was the first time I realized I had something special. I knew that I found my passion and purpose.

What is your music and message all about?

F.Y.D.I Our message is to empower women. We want women to love themselves despite all of the negativity and unrealistic expectations society throws at us.

Jules As a singer songwriter, I have a love for expressing my innermost thoughts through words and melodies. With my lyrics, I want listeners to find not only words that resonate, but also the courage to embrace their own unique stories. My goal is to use my platform to advocate for causes close to my heart. My upcoming music includes themes of self-discovery, female empowerment, and mental health. I just want to be able to inspire listeners to embrace their own uniqueness and find solace in the power of music. I also want to continue utilizing my growing social media presence to broaden my audience! Music is so powerful, and I look forward to exploring new sounds and creating music that moves people, to inspire others to appreciate the art & power of music in their own lives and most importantly have fun doing so!

How would you describe your vocal style?

F.Y.D.I My vocal style is very soulful, I take a lot of inspiration from singers like Missy Elliot, Brandy and Janelle Monáe. I have a very poetic style of writing that combines soul, R&B and Trap which is uniquely me.

Jules I do love all genres of music. My music definitely gives off a very energetic pop vibe, however, also includes influences ranging from alternative, EDM, and rock. A lot of people have also told me my voice is very soulful! I do think versatility is key. When it comes to making music and singing, I like to keep my options open and explore different sounds and styles.

What was the hardest part of making this song?

Jules I think coming to terms with emotions that I’ve been feeling for a long time and never fully expressed. When Marie from TN Management asked me to be one of the voices on this song, the timing couldn’t have been better. Over the past year or so I’ve been struggling with anxiety and feelings of insecurity. I feel as a woman there’s a great deal of pressure expected by us. This idea to be perfect. These expectations can be linked to feelings of sadness, can result in eating disorders, low confidence, and more, which I'll admit are struggles that I continue to deal with on a daily basis. These are things that I was never really open about. When Marie first showed me these lyrics, they were so true and relatable to me and everything I’ve been going through. I didn't even hesitate! I felt this could be my way of sharing my own story. Constantly comparing ourselves to others, idealizing looks, and not feeling good enough are feelings that inspired this song. I resonate so much with it, and I am honoured to be part of it!

F.Y.D.I Travelling from Australia to Canada. It was a hard journey but a worthy one.

What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?

F.Y.D.I Being able to collaborate with amazing like-minded creatives like Jules, Marie and Roy Hamilton III.

Jules In a way it’s helped me heal. Resonating so much with the lyrics, it’s what I needed at this point in my life. This song has reminded me that I don’t have to be perfect. It’s important to embrace your flaws, your insecurities, and love yourself as you are.

What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?

F.Y.D.I I want to leave our listeners to leave feeling empowered, optimistic and joyful.

Jules We hope to inspire girls and women listening to do the same! The fact that this song was written by women for women, makes it so much more meaningful. It was such a fun project to be part of!

How do you prepare for your live performances?

Jules It’s kind of a ritual at this point. I make sure to get lots of rest (physically and mentally). I drink lots of hot fluids and teas. I recently started steaming which I highly recommended! Vocal rest is important leading up to performance day and making sure to warm up your voice with exercises.

Practice of course…Rehearsals and running through your set. For me positive mindset and meditation is key! I get so excited to perform and when there’s an audience, being able to feed off their amazing energy is a big bonus. Most importantly I make sure to have fun!

F.Y.D.I I try to keep my schedule light, keep a calm state of mind, hydrate immensely and practice practice practice!
