Alexandra Beck: "North Winds" (Exclusive Interview)

Alexandra Beck: "North Winds" (Exclusive Interview)

What is the most important thing you want your fans to know about you?

I think as a person and a songwriter I want people to know what a journey of self discovery my life has been! I’ve worked so hard my whole life, chosen new life paths often, and had to fight for opportunities! A lot of choices I have made for myself have gone against the grain, and been things my close friends/family wouldn’t do!

Being from Saskatoon, Canada not a lot of people decide to pursue commercial music. I really figured out my love for music while living in a bigger city(Vancouver) for College and that this sort of opportunity or career path could even exist for myself.

Now I’ve made it to LA, I look back at how far I’ve come with my dream and I’m tremendously proud of myself and my growth!

What is your recording process like for this song?

I had a beat made for my song after I wrote the song. In Vancouver I found a great recording studio called Nova that Roy- my mentor set up in!

Before I record a song in the studio I spend the 2 weeks leading up doing nothing but song prep for the studio everyday. I usually have about 2-3 voice lessons in those 2 weeks to really work on my sound, stylization, and technique, so I’m on my A game when I arrive to record. I usually only book myself into the studio for 2-3 hr sessions for one song- so I have to be prepared! No wasting money, no wasting time!

About a week before I record a scratch vocal with my home mic set up into logic or garageband. This allows me to hear my voice with the beat/instrumentation, to create the vocal arrangement. I can start hearing harmonies, ad libs, and lots of different background vocal layers I want to add to my song to create build, depth, layers, different emotion and feel to the song.

What do you want your audience to feel when they listen to your music?

Happy! I want people to feel at ease, grounded, and to enjoy themselves. It’s crazy to think how much music has influenced my life, and how songs have given meaning to different circumstances in my life. I want my listeners to feel this when they listen to the “North Winds”. Maybe the North Winds will become a reminder to some listeners of the time they met their partner, or a specific night, or season of their lives.

How would you describe your genre and sound?

I just did a survey to get people’s opinion on my last song, everyone said I have a unique voice! I sound like myself to most people I guess!

I just love singing songs with big vocals. That’s how I would describe my sound to you in 2023. Maybe I’m a little pop, maybe I’m a little R&B, maybe I’m a little soul. But I just love to sing, and any song that shows off my unique voice is where you’ll find me!

What are your goals and aspirations for 2023?

I just moved to Los Angeles before the holidays. So I’m ready to divide and conquer in the city! I would love to have a few of the songs I have written placed on major artist’s albums, and have created enough buzz around my name that a major label wants to sign me to a recording contract. I love this city’s sheer artistry and the opportunity it holds for people doing what I’m doing.
