ZØ Marie (Exclusive Interview)
What inspires your music?
I am inspired by my life experiences and what I see in the world around me. I write to entertain, encourage, and give people joy.
How did you start your professional recording career?
I have been writing songs since I was 7 years old, but in 2020 I decided to start my professional recording career. I met with a producer in New York City to record my first professional song but unfortunately, there were a lot of issues with the track. My mentor referred me to Mike Tarsia at the legendary Sigma Sound Studio, and we began to create the music that I dreamed of making.
How did you come up with your single and/or EP?
I remember having a dream and hearing the melody of the hook in my head. After waking up, I recorded the melody of the hook into my voice memos, and the following morning I went to the studio and recorded “Alright.” The song lyrics were written during a time in my life when I was falling in love for the first time again. I think that the falling in love phase is the most beautiful one in a relationship.
What is your genre of music?
Contemporary R&B is the genre that best describes my sound.
Who are your influences?
The Isley Brothers, Marvin Gaye, and Teena Marie are my primary influences. Prince, Michael Jackson, and The Temptations are others who influenced me, along with generations of music creators and lovers.
How do you define success?
I define success as enjoying doing what I love while being able to make a living from my art.
What can we expect from you in 2022 and beyond?
I plan to create music and perform. My first album, Soulmate, has been completed and will be released in the Spring of 2023. My efforts will be devoted to marketing my songs and solidifying my personal relationship with my fan base. I love performing. I plan to perform and make appearances in support of my album
