Anna Morvai: "I Want To Breathe" (Exclusive Interview)

When did you first realize your ability to sing?

I have always been surrounded by music, my great-grandmother was a pianist, my grandmother is a cellist, as is my mother. It was natural that I already had an instrument in my hand at the age of 5, and it may be that the instrument suppressed the voice in me for a long time. In music school, I was always sent to different kinds of singing competitions, but I never felt that genre was for me. There was a big breakthrough when, after a breakup, my mom took me to a Macy Gray concert for comfort, where I cried and sang out the tension in the front row. That night I wrote my first own song, "My Heart Was Wrong". That's how it all started…

What is your music and message all about?

It is not my goal to send messages to the world. In my songs, almost exclusively my own stories are processed. Maybe it’s a therapy I use to digest my problems, but of course, I’m happy if people give feedback, that they feel the same way. I entertain myself with singing and I am delighted if someone else is being entertained by it as well.

How would you describe your vocal style?

Soul, jazz, and R&B genres are close to me, although I also tried trap-rap, I quickly realized that I shouldn't submit to trends.

What was the hardest part of making this song?

It is a new experience that I can create under "professional treatment". I learn a lot of new things this way, but at the same time, it isn't easy to work within the framework and keep the same rhythm in time as the other side. There is also a geographical distance between us, specifically half a world apart, so we can only work together online, despite this, I feel that the end result turned out amazing!

What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?

For me, the greatest anticipation is always when both the lyrics and the song are born in my head, and I hear it for the first time embedded in the musical background that comes from the music producer. I often worry if he is hearing the same thing going on in my head in the song.

What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?

Whatever happens, we have to believe in ourselves and that we are strong enough to go our way.

How do you prepare for your live performances?

I don't have a particular routine, I like to know about the technical conditions, anyway I try not to stress myself out. I tend to get a little nervous before a performance, but fortunately, this feeling goes away when I'm on stage.
