Rachel White: 'You Don't Want Me Anymore' (Exclusive Interview)

When did you first realize your ability to sing?

I actually used to think I was more of a dancer as I only started singing from around the age of 14 when I joined part time musical theatre groups in the city of Edinburgh. Eventually I went on to train at The MGA Academy of performing arts for three years. I only started writing my own music around 2018 shortly after I moved to London.

What is your music and message all about?

As an artist I want to write music that is raw and real. My first single royalty touches on believing in yourself, going after what you truly want and not caring about what others think of you. Whilst continuing with that theme I also have released music since then that touches on the struggles of heartbreak and love but also feeling your best self. I want to inspire others to pick themselves up and tackle anything life throws at them.

How would you describe your vocal style?

I have a clear pop tone to my voice and the music I produce sits well with the modern pop genre

What was the hardest part of making this song?

I think the hardest part was probably having to be so honest with myself and open up to what I was writing about. I had recently come out of hospital after a health scare and of course it made something really apparent for me. I want to be as real as possible as an artist. With this song it was almost therapy, I wanted to write about how I have been heartbroken but have also had to be honest and do the heartbreaking before.

What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?

Hearing the first draft of the song with the production was the most enjoyable part of this process. As I work with a producer who lives in Aberdeen (the north of Scotland) and I am currently based in London, I was so in awe at how good it sounded knowing that I had recorded the vocals in my bedroom under a duvet hanging over my wardrobe.

What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?

I would love my listeners to take whatever prospective they want from the song and hope that they know they aren’t alone with however they are feeling, Love is hard but you always learn something from it so trust that you’ll grow and move forward.
