Sarah Navaratnam: 'A Moment' (Exclusive Interview)

Where are you from?

I am from Richmond Hill, Ontario.

How did you get your start in music?

I was eight years old when my mother took me to see Katy Perry’s “Part of Me” documentary and since then, I made it my goal and aspiration to become a leading recording artist in this industry. It took years of practicing in the basement of my house, performing at Church and understanding the technical aspects of the voice in countless choirs for me to reach this point in my career.

Is music a big part of your family?

Music is definitely not a big part of my family. Growing up, I always enjoyed listening to classical music with my dad, however, my parents do not have any musical background. This definitely made it a lot more difficult for me to navigate my music career. At times, I felt as though I had no one to turn to for advice when I really needed it. Even though it was difficult at times, I am grateful to have a family that is completely supportive of my career and vision as an artist.

What is the biggest message you want to bring to your audience?

The biggest message I want to bring to my audience is to view failure, as a part of growth. Most of my songs involve me making poor judgements, resulting in serious consequences. Had I not made those choices, I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to learn from them, become stronger and write about them in a new light.

What has been the most challenging part of making this song?

The most challenging part of writing this song was finding the best way to lyrically describe the experience in which it is based on. A Moment is about a toxic connection with a person who seeks fulfillment through attaining social status.

Any good vocal health tips you can share?

The best vocal health tip I can share is to ensure that you get enough sleep the night before any performance. I also recommend doing vocal warm ups that exercise each of your vocal registers. This will allow you to sing without strain and have more control over where you place each note throughout a song.

What are your goals for the rest of 2023?

My goals for the rest of 2023, are to record and produce for my upcoming EP, while continuing to remain active on instagram and tik tok exploring as many different genres and styles as possible. I also hope to perform at gigs and showcases whenever I have the opportunity.
