Lux Bala: "Who's It Gonna Be" (Feature/Interview)

When did you first realize your ability to sing?

In preschool, when I was three years old. Our class did a lot of musical activities and singing practice. The teachers, assistants and parent volunteers would tell me my voice was really good. I didn't know on my own, but learned about my ability through their encouragement. That is also the time period when I began to fall in love with music and the act of singing.

What is your music and message all about?

It is about loving yourself and knowing what you deserve. That you don't need to depend on anyone for your happiness. That you can heal from anything that hurts you, and come out brighter. And I feel you should never dull your shine to make others comfortable.

How would you describe your vocal style?

It is mostly R&B/Soul. But I love singing various styles of music from choral to pop.

What was the hardest part of making this song?

The hardest part was finding "my voice". This is my first original song so learning and figuring out what "sound" best represented me was challenging at first.

What was the most enjoyable part of making this song?

It was writing the lyrics and recording the song. Being able to write and turn a personal experience into a whole song is such a cool feeling. And getting to go to the studio and record the song was also so much fun.

What is one feeling you want to leave listeners with?

There is this word I learned that I think best describes the feeling: frisson. I want listeners of my music to feel excitement, and that warm, goosebump-causing feeling. That's what I look for in the music I listen to myself.

How do you prepare for your live performances?

Practice. Practice, practice, practice. But at the same time, still taking care of my vocals and resting. And sometimes my confidence is not where I want it to be before singing in front of an audience, so I tell myself positive affirmations to help calm my nerves. Also, I remind myself why I enjoy getting to perform for people. Because what is the point if you don't enjoy the experience?
