Èva Ilov: "Like My Mama" (Feature/Interview)

What is the most important thing you want your fans to know about you? The most important thing I want my fans to know is that everything I create comes from a real place. I don’t make music just to make a sound, I do it to express what I’m feeling, even when it’s vulnerable or messy. I’ve always been a bit of a perfectionist (which is probably just part of being an artist), but lately I’ve been working on letting that go. I’ve realised that the most powerful moments in music often come from being raw and honest, not polished. If my music can help someone feel something, or remind them that they’re not alone in what they’re going through, then that’s everything to me

What is your recording process like for this song? The recording process was definitely different, since I’m in Australia and Roy’s based in Canada, so everything happened remotely over Zoom. We spent a lot of time bouncing ideas back and forth, drawing some inspiration from songs like Kehlani’s ‘Honey’ and the drumbeat in Mario’s ‘Let Me Love You’. Roy would share his screen while producing so I could be part of the creative process in real time, even from across the world. I recorded my vocals here, sent them over, and we refined everything through constant emailing and collaboration. It wasn’t always easy not being in the same studio, but it was such a valuable experience and a great opportunity to connect and create something special internationally.

What do you want your audience to feel when they listen to your music? I want people to feel like they can see themselves in my music, like the things I’m singing about could be pages from their own life. I know that sounds cliché, but for me, relatability is everything. It’s how people connect not just to the song, but to me as an artist, on a personal level. Whether it’s a track like ‘Like My Mama’, which is rooted in love and gratitude, or something more emotional I release down the line, I want the listener to feel what I’m going through too. I want them to experience the highs, the hurt, the healing, all of it. If my music can give someone a sense of comfort or help them escape and transport to a different place for a moment, then I’ve done what I set out to do. I’m always aiming to create that space where people can tap into something deeper, maybe their own subconscious, or just a quiet part of themselves they don’t usually sit with. Music has that power, and I want mine to do just that.

How would you describe your genre and sound? I’d say I’m quite a versatile artist when it comes to genre, which is something I love, but it can also make it tricky when trying to define exactly where I sit musically. Right now, I’m leaning into an R&B/soul-pop direction, because that’s the kind of music that really makes me feel. it’s emotional, groovy, and honest. Vocally, I’d describe my sound as rich and contoured, but also light and airy when it needs to be. I love being bold with my choices and letting the tone shift depending on what the emotion calls for. That contrast allows me to channel different energies and reach people in different ways — whether they connect with depth, warmth, vulnerability, or power. I think that’s what makes my sound feel real and adaptable, it can meet people wherever they’re at.

What are your goals and aspirations for 2025? I think my goals for 2025 would be continuing to build myself personally, brand wise and vocally to begin to reach my full potential. Im definitely in my peak era so focusing on what I need to do to get myself out there more is crucial. I think doing more gigs, collaborating with more artists and releasing more music or experimenting with different instruments and sounds is also a great way to build what I’m good at. I rlly do aspire to get out of my comfort zone this year.
