25 Years of Michael Jackson's Invincible | A Moment I'll Never Forget
Today marks 25 years since Michael Jackson released Invincible.
October 30, 2001.
There are certain moments in your career that stay with you forever. Moments that remind you why you fell in love with music in the first place.
For me, one of those moments happened at Sony Studios in New York City, where I had an experience I'll never forget.
The day I met Michael Jackson and witnessed musical genius firsthand.
I remember being escorted by bodyguards into the main recording studio. When I walked in, I saw Michael Jackson and legendary producer Teddy Riley listening to and playing the song "Shout."
I found a seat on the sofa and quietly watched them interact.
What struck me immediately was their chemistry. They seemed to communicate without saying a word. It was almost telepathic. There was an unspoken musical understanding between them that was incredible to witness.
Then, Michael and Teddy turned around and motioned for me to walk up to the mixing console.
I approached, and Michael shook my hand and complimented me on the song.
Think about that for a moment. Michael Jackson was complimenting my work.
I'll never forget how comfortable he made me feel. In fact, one of the funniest little details I remember is that he asked me about my sweater. I offered to give it to him, which made him laugh. He politely declined.
I was so nervous and caught up in the moment that I didn't even think to ask for a photograph. Looking back, that's one thing I wish I had done!
A Masterclass in Vocal Production
Beyond the experience of meeting Michael, I was fascinated by what I was hearing in the studio.
I paid close attention to the details in the vocal production. When they soloed the vocals, I could hear all the crescendos, vocal effects and subtle nuances that were part of the overall mix.
Every detail mattered.
It was a reminder that greatness isn't just about having an extraordinary voice or writing a great song. It's also about the countless decisions, layers and details that go into creating a record.
I was young, eager to learn, and fortunate enough to witness two masters of their craft working together.
25 Years Later
Michael Jackson's Invincible remains an important chapter in music history.
As someone who has spent decades writing, producing and developing recording artists, I still appreciate the lessons I took away from experiences like this.
Sometimes you don't realize how significant a moment is until years later.
I'm grateful I had the opportunity to be in that room, to meet Michael, and to witness the creative connection between him and Teddy Riley.
Twenty-five years later, I still remember it like yesterday.
Rest in peace, Michael Jackson. Your music continues to inspire generations.
